Google Consent Mode v2
implemented correctly, without code
Since March 2024, Google Ads and GA4 require consent signals for EU users. CookieFix sets the default state to "denied", updates the signals on click and keeps measurement through modeling — all automatically.
What is Google Consent Mode v2?
Consent Mode v2 is the mechanism through which a website tells Google what the visitor accepted. Google Analytics 4 and Google Ads tags adapt their behavior: with consent they collect normally; without it they send only anonymous pings from which Google models conversions. Since 2024 it is mandatory for remarketing and conversion measurement in the EU.
- ad_storage — advertising cookies
- analytics_storage — analytics cookies
- ad_user_data — sending user data to Google Ads
- ad_personalization — personalized ads and remarketing

Frequently asked questions about Consent Mode v2
Yes, if you use Google Ads or GA4 for EU/EEA users and want remarketing or conversion measurement. Google has required the ad_user_data and ad_personalization signals since March 2024; without them these features stop receiving data.
No. Consent Mode only passes the decision to Google; the decision must be collected through a compliant banner. CookieFix does both.
Advanced loads Google tags before consent, but without cookies, and enables conversion modeling; Basic loads nothing until consent. Advanced gives better data, Basic is the most conservative legal choice. Both are available in CookieFix.
Yes. CookieFix pushes the signals through the dataLayer and in GTM you use the tags' consent settings (Consent Overview). There is a dedicated guide for the GTM integration.
In GA4, Admin → DebugView, you see the consent events with their default and update values. Alternatively, the Google Tag Assistant extension shows the signal state on the page.
Consent Mode is Google-specific. For the other platforms CookieFix blocks the scripts until consent and runs them afterwards, which covers the legal requirement.
